OUR PROCESS

Marine Anoxic Carbon Storage (MACS) is a process for large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

We preserve excess biomass, specifically unused plant stalks left over after agricultural processes, in extremely salty, oxygen-free (anoxic) basins in the ocean's floor. This dramatically slows the rate of decomposition, preventing carbon from re-entering the atmosphere.

HOW PLANTS FIX CARBON

MACS relies on the natural process of photosynthesis to remove carbon.

Plants absorb CO2 as they grow in the spring and summer. The plant absorption rate exceeds that of man-made emissions.

Plants release CO2 as they decompose in the fall and winter.
‍
By arresting that state of decomposition, Carboniferous's MACS approach — the preserving of agricultural plant stalks in anoxic basins — is removing C02 from the atmosphere for at least 1,000 years.
